Classes

I primarily teach classes that are designed to prepare students to work in journalism. Some of my classes require students to write for multiple media, as well as work with cameras, digital recorders, and software. I want my students to be multi-skilled and prepared to work in any newspaper, television station, or online news outlet. Throughout my classes, I place a great deal of emphasis on professional ethics.

Communication Ethics
Comm 4254 (undergraduate) and Comm 5814 (graduate)
Students will be introduced to a variety of ethical theories and decision-making models as they consider the ethical issues that media professionals face. The goal is to prepare students to face on-the-job ethical dilemmas. We'll discuss various types of media such as journalism, public relations, and advertising.

Social Media Theories and Practices
Comm 4264
The purpose of this class is to take a critical look at social media and to consider how it affects us individually and as a collective culture. Our goal is to explore the good and the bad that this platform brings to our lives. We will discuss social media as an instrument of hate and a tool for religion. We will explore the role that social media has played in social movements as well as the role that it plays in our daily lives.

Multimedia Reporting
Comm 3154
In this class, students will study the nuts and bolts of newspaper reporting while also developing multimedia journalism skills. Students will conduct interviews, write news stories, develop photo slideshows, dabble with video content, and showcase their work online.

Media and Society
Comm 2084
In this class students learn about the history of the media while they also contemplate the implications of the media. We explore all types of media ranging from newspapers and film to video games.

International Communication
Comm 4044

Magazine Writing
