I primarily teach classes that are designed to prepare students to work in journalism. Many of my classes require students to write for multiple media, as well as work with cameras, digital recorders, and software. I want my students to be multi-skilled and prepared to work in any newspaper, television station, or online news outlet. Throughout my classes, I place a great deal of emphasis on professional ethics.
Comm 4254 (undergraduate) and Comm 5814 (graduate)
Students will be introduced to a variety of ethical theories and decision-making models as they consider the ethical issues that media professionals face. The goal is to prepare students to face on-the-job ethical dilemmas. We'll discuss various types of media such as journalism, public relations, and advertising.
Students will study methods for using social media as a professional communication tool. They will learn to embed social media content, develop techniques for branding their own identities online, and consider strategies for branding media companies and products online. The also will discuss social movements that have been empowered via social media.
In this class, students will study the nuts and bolts of newspaper reporting while also developing multimedia journalism skills. Students will conduct interviews, write news stories, develop photo slideshows, dabble with video content, and showcase their work online.
